Discover the passion, sensuality and mystery of Argentine Tango!
As one new tanguero put it,
"Helaine,
I’m so excited about the group summer session and the thought of reaching that point of 'tangoing' my way into a position of earning "permission to seduce"; it's not every day an opportunity such as this is presented to me and so I'm eager to schedule my 'taster' lesson.
I commend you for promoting the issue which all men seem to cherish, that being the obvious romantic possibilities which are certain to materialize within the next three months...and hopefully beyond!"

Saturday 3 a.m. at Miami's Tango Fantasy
I'm back from Miami. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend.
Saturday night I was having a ball at the 3rd milonga of the Tango Fantasy Festival, dancing with my favorite partners and some new ones I didn't know before. I took a break at 3 a.m. to shoot a few photos for you (attached). Can you imagine yourself in a photo like this from next year's festival? (Staying up till 3 or 4 is optional. ;) )
Here's something you can all look forward to if you want to enjoy some long weekends with a new focus:
There are tango festivals around the country and internationally every month of the year! I'm planning to go to others this year in Chicago, Denver and Portland, and I'll be teaching a seminar and performing at a festival in Missouri in September. Plus a few jaunts to New York - I can't wait!
By the way, ladies - ever since I defined and started following my own "100% Fool Proof Formula for Enjoying Every Milonga", I always have a great time at milongas and dance with the men I prefer. (I NEVER invite!) The only reason I ever don't enjoy myself is in the rare case that the music is bad, or if I don't follow my formula all the way!
It took me about 13 years to put together all my understanding about tango and the milonga culture to come up with my 100% Fail Proof Formula. YOU don't have to wait so long - you can master it in your FIRST YEAR, because you'll learn my Formula be part of your training when you enroll Naples Tango's Group or Private classes. Then you can apply it to our milongas in Naples, and others in Ft. Myers, Sarasota and Miami. Or anywhere else in the world.
P.S. I still have a place for one woman or one couple in the new group class beginning Monday, June 1, 2009. http://tiny.cc/groupclass
Another Friday mini-milonga at the Bayshore Break!
Hello Naples Tango friends.
Last Friday we had so much fun at the last minute mini-milonga at the Bayshore Break - what a surprise!
This new place is informal, brand new, a bit artistic, clean, down-to-earth. Funny, it's a sandwich place during the day, but owners Bower and Lisa dreamed up a very sophisticated evening menu of modestly-priced, one-dish meals (such as fresh Tuna and Avocado tartare with Wasabi Vinaigrette and Sesame Crackers, . . . Cold Cucumber & Avocado Soup with Yogurt and Basil, . . . Caesar Salad Boats with Grilled Chicken . . . you get the idea). People raved about their food. The desserts and house wines were great too.
So the dining experience changed the atmosphere from dancing in a funky (as in "earthy and uncomplicated") new coffee shop to . . . what it might have been like if people had danced tango in New York's 1970's TriBeCa (when it was working artists' lofts, before the professionals moved in ;) ).
So let's meet there again this Friday! We're changing the formula a bit. Here are the details:
Friday, May 15, 2009 from 7:30-10:30 pm
please meet me for a mini-milonga
at the Bayshore Break (the old Bayshore Coffee Company)
3570 Bayshore Drive (on the right coming from 41)
A light, but INTERESTING, menu of snacks and desserts will be available,
and wine, beer, coffees, cappuccinos, mochas, and special teas.
NEW!: Admission this Friday $10 - includes your first beverage (wine, beer, juices, coffees or teas)
2-for-1 Special!: Bring a FIRST TIME guest to Naples Tango and $10 covers drinks for two!
Bonus Dinner Raffle: In addition to your 2-for-1 Special, if you bring a first-time Naples Tango guest and they add their email address to our mailing list, YOUR name will go into the 9PM raffle drawing for a F.R.E.E. dinner menu dish! (Can cover what you may have already ordered.)
Note: The 2-for-1 Special and bonus raffle eligibility apply to ONE GUEST PER PERSON.
Please RSVP for yourself and your guests so I can tell Bower and Lisa how many of us to expect.
The floor's a smooth cement, painted fun and pretty by Lisa herself - gives the room an uplifting feeling!
Please come this Friday - don't procrastinate! Next week I won't be in town - I'll be at the Tango Fantasy Festival at Miami's Deauville, dancing the night away! (May 21-26 - Link below in P.P.P.S.)
Make sure you arrive while it's still light out, so you can find the place easily. Keep an eye out on your right for the driveway marker of the LITTLE FAT MAN holding up the Bayshore Break sign.
I'm working on a brand new playlist for you. Come down and dance with us, and bring a friend who might get excited about learning our tango!!
Abrazos, and see you Friday!

Tango's score on the Stress-Beater list: an amazing 8 out of 9!
In the May 2009 AARP Bulletin (my mother's copy ;) ) the feature article, by Barbara Basler, is entitled "Stress - Why it's making you sick". Page 14.
The headline on bulletin's cover is:
"What, Me Worry?
Economic stress
can wreck your immune system,
increase your blood pressure and
speed up aging.
9 ways to loosen up."
The adjacent cover photo shows a fifty-something man with furrowed brow, eyes full of anxiety, and all 10 fingernails rammed into his teeth. The photo is shot from above, with a lense that makes his head and hands-in-his-mouth look large and his feet look distant and tiny, making him look powerless.
Before I even read the article, my eye jumped to the sidebar. It summarizes Ms. Basler's recommended antidotes to health-robbing stress. I did a quick tally on how Argentine Tango rates as a stress-beater. I'll quote the 9 items on the list for you and tell you how tango fits in.
"PROVEN STRATEGIES FOR BEATING STRESS
"- Socialize. See friends, relatives, go to club meetings. Stay connected. This is paramount."
Well, almost everyone who frequents milongas (tango dance evenings or events) will agree that part of the attraction to going to dance tango is the context in which we dance. It's almost universally a warm, welcoming environment that attracts people who have something strong in common with each other. It's the one environment I know of where strict physical barriers between people melt away, and friendly affection is comfortably expressed. When people say they need a "tango fix" (like an addict might say), . . . . read entire article
