Introducing Women's Tango Technique and "Adornos" (Embellishments)

Men, don't go away! Please read on just a minute.

This message is for all the women in our community, who are NOT currently enrolled in a Naples Tango class. If you are a MAN reading this, because you might know a woman who would enjoy this class. So I urge you to forward the link at the end of this posting to your women friends, main squeeze, daughters, and colleagues. (Here it is for your convenience: http://tiny.cc/womenstechnique .)

I mentioned this class last week, together with an technique option for men. Many women responded immediately!

So here again are the benefits of the class and then the details:

Women's Tango Technique & "Adornos" (Embellishments)
Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 PM, June 29-August 25, 2009
at the Backstage Dance Academy, 5400 Jaeger Road (off Pine Ridge; Jaeger's about a block east of Noodles)
1) For women who don't yet dance or study Argentine Tango:
Back in Italy, where I had a big tango school, I also called this class "The Grace of a Tanguera" for women who haven't yet started dance tango. It uses the body language of tango to strengthen your sense of balance and add grace and sensuality to your movements in general. Even if you are not in one of my tango courses, these lessons will prepare your body to know how to respond to the man's various invitations to move within his embrace (i.e., "the lead").

Please read on to find out even more:

2) For women who already dance Argentine Tango (beginners through advanced levels):

- the Technique part of this course will help you master your balance faster, and execute your dance movements like a Queen, gracefully and with more confidence.

- The "Adornos" (Embellishments) part is the fun part, that feeds your creativity and artistry, and helps you develop your own "signature" when you dance tango.

Embellishments are what you can do with your free foot and leg (you are always standing on one leg with the other leg free) during pauses in the music: curlicues, big and little round gestures, high and low spikes, syncopations, games - and lots more fun things that let you infuse the dance with your personality, while the man is the primary improviser.

You can really develop your own musicality by practicing "adornos". And while they're technically just artistic, expressive movements, men find them sexy when you use them well. Learning "adornos" also helps your balance tremendously.

We're both in the headlines!

Yesterday a great, great talent and a complex and controversial "personaggio" made headlines by leaving us,
at the young age of 50.

I prefer to remember him as he was in the photo above.

I too made headlines yesterday, albeit more modestly. Hot off the presses, Gulfshore Life Magazine's July cover story called "Passions in Paradise", by Chris Wadsworth, features yours truly (p. 38) as part of a trio of people living their passions.

The full-page photo in the magazine was from the same shoot, by photographer Brian Tietz, as the one attached.
I prefer my own image in the second photo above.
Here's the online version of the article. Scroll down to "Bewitched by the Tango" - I'm 3rd in the trio.
(But read the whole article!) :

I hope you enjoy the article.
And I hope Mr. Jackson has found peace.

P.S. Tonight at our "Practi-longa" at the Bayshore Break, I'll have a special "cortina" (musical intervals between tango sets) in homage. Please join us! Hours and directions in the righthand column. Free demo lesson beforehand!

Are you getting enough hugs?

Yesterday a good friend and tango student of mine from the East Coast was in the area for business, so he invited me to dinner. Carl has been dancing tango for about 3 years. During our long conversation about life and tango, he remarked that it's not only the new confidence in his masculine appeal to women that tango gives him. He said that what he loves most is "The Hug Factor". No matter what's going on in his romantic life, Carl continues to be "nourished" by tango evenings filled with 3-minute embraces.

He said that he first learned to dance tango in "open embrace", but once he learned the "close embrace" style, it became his favorite way to dance. Carl's a nice, solid dancer with pleasant musicality that women love to snuggle up to for a set of tangos! It's a safe vehicle for this kind of intimacy, because at the end of a 12-minute set you politely say "thank you" to each other, the man may escort the woman back to her seat, and that's the end of the encounter, till the next time you decide to dance together. It may be an hour later, or a month later, or never again if one of you is a traveling visitor, but you've shared a special moment in what tango people often call "a warm embrace".

(Personally, I look forward to those rare and special times when it magically becomes "a hot embrace" ;) . . . at the end of which you still say "Thank you" and return to your seat. It's the choice of both partners to let it go in that direction, because, as we all know, "It takes two to tango!")

How would you like to add "The Hug Factor" to your life? You can do it with the love of your life, or you could enjoy a lifelong "love story" with the opposite sex: locally, nationally, or all over the world! (How'd you like to go with me on a tango tour of Italy next year, and dance tango with my friends in 10 different cities?)

If you're single, the tango embrace can lead to romance, but it doesn't have to. If you're married, it can infuse your marriage with new romance and passion, yet let you enjoy the close company of the opposite sex, knowing that every tango is finite, and it's easy to keep it friendly. Likewise, you can dance with a family member, with an intimate male-female dialogue, without any "weirdness".
